Bloomberg, still taking over the world

There was a day when the battle to colonize the desktop on Wall Street and beyond riveted many, when the players went beyond big names like Dow Jones and Reuters to upstarts like EJV (remember them?) and Bloomberg. The latter has, of course, come out on top in many ways.

There's still a lot of desktop competition, but few back then could have predicted what a juggernaut Bloomberg would become. It now employs more journalists than Dow Jones, and just picked up Business Week on the cheap, which has inspired the New York Times to take a look at its growth. With its latest acquisition, it's now broadening its sights beyond the core financial world, which makes sense because try as it might, tot even Bloomberg is immune from Wall Street's woes.

"This year, for the first time in the company's history, the number of installed terminals will fall, albeit modestly," the Times notes. "Some analysts wonder whether the company's fast-growth days could be behind it, spurring it to seek new ways to make money on Wall Street while upping the ante in its media game."
